What can you expect to see?

The days are getting shorter and the nights are getting longer, all the more reason to visit S&P gallery after dark!

Every first Friday of the month we host our late-night openings, with special guests and charming discussion surrounding the wonderful pieces in our collection. This coming November we welcome Deborah Azzopardi. With larger than life artworks and an admiration for all things ‘naughty’, Azzopardi has been a beacon of (very bright) light on a rather drizzly Gloucester road this week. Just look at how inviting the bright colours of our current Pop-Art showcase are!

‘I say A Little Prayer for You Certified’ Limited-Edition Print of 50
40 x 40 inches
Gouttelette on paper
Price inc. VAT £2160

Above: The focus is on a beautiful female face, with her eyes closed, full red lips and matching nails. She has a ‘film star’ quality and is full of femininity. There is a softness in her smile, and a gentle thought in her mind of concern, that is used for the title of this painting. ‘I Say a Little Prayer for You’ works so perfectly as she leans her face into her hands. This is a story of love.

The Queen of Pop Art

Azzopardi is a London based artist who has been producing distinctive and playful images for over 35 years. To have a selection of her pieces exclusive to us at S&P gallery is truly an honour, and even more so to welcome her into our home on Gloucester road.

Emerging from a background in commercial art, where her clients included household names such as Bovril, Bisto, and Disney. Azzopardi recalls it being enjoyable but demanding work, and after a serious illness some years ago she decided to concentrate on painting subjects that really meant something to her, reasoning that ‘Life’s short, and if you do what you love then everything else will eventually fall into place’.

Her mother was a fashion designer at Jaeger and Azzopardi believes that this is where much of her creativity derives from. Azzopardi works in acrylic, usually on board or canvas, and claims that her sense of mischief and dark humour inspires much of her subject matter.

“Life’s short, and if you do what you love then everything else will eventually fall into place.”

She has exhibited successfully throughout the United Kingdom over the last few years. Azzopardi’s energetic take on the wonders and joy of such passions allow for a genuinely enjoyable experience of the works. Bright and bold colours paired with smirks and suggestive body language. The works are full of life and allow us as viewers to share the excitement and interpret our own narrative.

A Sneak Peek

Here are a two highlight pieces from the 6 exclusive Azzopardi prints in the collection, come and see the rest by reserving your space at our Pop Art Showcase night.

‘Saturday Night’ Certified Limited-Edition Print of 50
40 x 40 inches
Gouttelette on paper
Price inc. VAT £2160

From a profile view, Red lipstick is being applied to match the red nails as if no one else is watching. We are seeing her in a private moment, possibly through a slightly open door or maybe a mirror reflection. The eye-catching red lipstick suggests her confidence and independence. Saturday nights are for going out and having fun. The title is so appropriate.

This painting was inspired by the Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, shown by the international art gallery Perrotin at Art Basel in Miami in 2019 where it was sold for US$120,000. It was duct- taped to the wall and the owner of the gallery stated that ‘bananas are a symbol of global trade, a double-entendre as well as a classic device for humour’. On the Saturday, New York based performance artist David Datuna ate the banana in-front of a convention Center full of art lovers and the gallery stated that whilst the banana was indeed consumed, it didn’t diminish the integrity of the six figure artwork which was not destroyed, as the banana is simply the idea. Deborah Azzopardi who exhibited in Miami, was inspired to have the idea of producing and original work of art with a Limited Edition of only 120 copies

Each print is hand numbered and accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist. The certificate is numbered to match the print.
