Try Again is signed and dated 1906. It depicts 4 young girls, a dog and two puppies. The youngest girl in the painting is Elsley’s daughter, Marjorie. The girls are happy and playful with the puppies whilst the dog looks down the stairs at them calmly. It is a very pretty painting with beautiful flowers and a romanticised staircase and background.

During the middle of the nineteenth century, genre paintings with domestic life subjects became popular in England. The new affluent middle class favoured in particular genre paintings that depicted scenes of children with their pets in playful settings. Arthur John Elsley was one of the most popular English artists who depicted such childhood scenes in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.

The print is hand numbered and accompanied by a certificate signed by the Master Printer and bearing a matching number to the print.
