This stunning work of art by Valentino Monticello, Il Campanello, is produced, in accordance with the artist’s customary technique . He was cutting and shaping only the labels taken from bottles of fine wine in order to create the collage. All the wines used here emanate from Italy, so as to add to the atmosphere of the scene.
Il Campanello, or The Night Bell, is a one-act “melodramma giocoso” by Gaetano Donizetti. Its Italian libretto is based on the French vaudeville La Sonnette de Nuit. It premiered at Teatro Nuovo in Milan in 1836. Il Campanello is not serious, elevated or complex. It tells the story of Don Annibale Pistacchio, an old apothecary. He has just married the young Serafina. Enrico, Serafina's former lover, constantly interrupts the wedding night showing up in several disguises. He was calling at Pistacchio's pharmacy by ringing the night bell, asking the unfortunate groom a preposterous list of prescriptions.
The print is hand numbered and accompanied by a certificate signed by the Master Printer and bearing a matching number to the print.
