‘Wake Up! It’s Christmas Morning!’ is painted with great affection and has lovely touches, particularly the peacock feather in the hat. The painting depicts an older girl and her dog peering over the younger girl sleeping because they are so eager with the excitement that it is Christmas day. The bed was taken into the studio so that Elsely could paint it.
The older girl is Queenie of whom a head and shoulders oil sketch hung in the Elsley home. She married an American at the end of the First World War, and went to live in the United States. The younger girl is Marjorie, Elsley’s daughter.
The painting was kept by Marjorie until some confidence trickster tried to steal it from her in the early 1980s. She then decided to auction it at Sotheby’s, London.
The print is hand numbered and accompanied by a certificate signed by the Master Printer and bearing a matching number to the print.
