The vibrant cultures acquired during her time in New Orleans, Miami and Quebec have inspired Marsha Hammel's passion for the two prevalent themes in her art; music and the figure. In its mastery of line, Jazz Ensemble shows clearly the skills of the draftsman which the artist acquired through her early training. Jazz Ensemble is also characterised by the artist's sense of colour. Marsha Hammel decided in the 1980s to limit her palette to earth pigments; black, white, ultramarine, alizarin crimson and cadmium yellow medium. Colour has gradually returned to her work but, as Jazz Ensemble shows, this simple palette is still the basis for her work today.
