'Vegas' is Marsha Hammel’s affectionate tribute to the excitement and colour of Las Vegas in its heyday in the late 1950s and early ’60s. At the time, the city in Nevada was just beginning to establish a reputation as an entertainment destination and the enthusiastic support of some of America’s greatest young music and entertainment stars allowed a city of lights and glamour to grow out of the dust of the Nevada desert. Do you recognize any of the performers Marsha Hammel has chosen to portray?
Inspired by her own passion for music, Marsha Hammel says: “I paint for music-lovers worldwide. It is they who are the heart and blood of this remarkable art form, and not all of them make it to the great stages of Las Vegas.” In Vegas, Marsha Hammel makes a bold and fascinating use of colour. She decided as a young artist that colour was taking over her compositions and decided to limit her palette to earth pigments, principally black, white, ultramarine, alizarin crimson and cadmium yellow medium. Since then colour has gradually returned to her art but, as this powerful painting shows, this simple palette is still the basis of her work today.
