Kauto Star became the first horse in history to regain the Cheltenham Gold Cup after his victory during the festival in March 2009. The 9-year old gelding won the race in 2007, but was beaten by Denman in 2008. In 2009, under Ruby Walsh, he took the lead three fences out and was eventually victorious by 13 lengths, pushing Denman into second place.
Kauto Star is already a three-time winner of the King George VI at Kempton Park and was the favourite at 7 to 4 when the race began. Trained by Paul Nicholls, who also trains Denman, Kauto Star is owned by Clive Smith, who purchased the horse in France for €400,000. After the race, Ruby Walsh was quoted as saying: “He is the greatest horse I have ever ridden.”
Kauto Star is pronounced Kaw-toe Star.
