Midsummer Fishing is an amalgamation of various different elements but is mainly based on views around the River Rother in West Sussex. The original canvas was very large, with dimensions of 38" x 56", and was created as the centrepiece for a major exhibition. Although not a fisherman, Mervyn Goode painted the scene in identification with the angler who is central to it; both artist and fisherman share a love of the tranquillity and serenity of the English countryside in summer-time.
